Primal Scream – Boardmasters Festival
In the summer I got to photograph Primal Scream – Boardmasters Festival in Newquay.
I’ve attended Boardmasters Festival since I moved to Cornwall in 2005, and this was the first time that I’ve photographed it. I was only able to attend on the Sunday of the which was headlined by James Bay. The bill also included White Denim, Soul II Soul, Coasts and the Magic Numbers. Having been a massive Primal Scream fan the indie kid in me was a little excited to photograph them.
It’s been over 25 years since Primal Screams breakthrough album ‘Screamadelica’ and they have consistently made unique albums that have covered most genres. From pop to punk to rock n roll and industrial dance, all topped off with a little experimental. They covered it all in a set that spanned their career and it was good to hear tracks from their 11th studio album ‘ Chaosmosis’ alongside favourites Movin’ On Up and Country Girl; which had the crowd bouncing along.
Having first seen them live in 1997 on the ‘Vanish Point’ tour, they still seem to carry a sense of chaos and madness to the tunes. But Primal Scream are tight enough to move between the mesmeric Higher than the Sun and the straightforward blues rock of Rocks without sounding at all lost to this Boardmasters crowd.
