Live Music – 2018 Favourites
As 2018 draws to a close I’m taking my traditional look back on the year with Live Music – 2018 Favourites. Although I didn’t make it to as many smaller shows this year, I still got to shoot close to 100 bands & artists.
Those included some of the biggest names in the world. And after been a fan for 20 years I shot Queens of the Stone Age when they played at the Eden Sessions. This was a big one for me, as was Idris Elba. One of the biggest names in film & television he is also a renowned DJ and was one of the highlights of this years Boardmasters Festival.
One of my favourite images from 2018 was from Cornwall band ‘Bastard‘. The shot of bassist Ele Lucas was featured in the Weekends Best Pictures on the Guardian website.
Aside from shooting music I’ve listened to plenty of it. (over 27,000 minutes in 2018 according to Spotify). My annual best of albums is further down (keep scrolling) and a link to a spot playlist with some of my favourite pictures of the year.
And I couldn’t finish this little look back without mentioning a few of the gigs that I’ve been to this year. First up one of the greatest gigs that I’ve witnessed in almost 30 years of going to shows. And that show was Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds at Victoria Park, London.
The show was mesmerising and I had one of the most emotional 12 minutes that I’ve ever experienced at a gig. This was when he brought Kylie Minogue out for their duet of ‘Where the Wild Roses Grow’ followed by ‘Jubilee Street‘. The latter being my favourite Nick Cave song and the live version has grown into an 8 minute beast!
The other two honourable mentions are to Idles for their show in Plymouth back in April. And then the mighty Slayer last month in Birmingham, in what was probably the last times that I’ll ever see them live.
Another image that had a plenty of interest was of Gary Barlow at the Eden Sessions. During the show he used a confetti cannon which used plastic confetti. And with so much coverage of single use plastics this was a big no no in the eyes of the media. I was inundated from news agencies asking for permission to use the picture as the story gained momentum. You can see the original article on Cornwall Live.
