Lucy & Kyle’s Stennack Farm wedding was exactly the kind of day this venue suits: Relaxed, full of personality, and with a brilliant party atmosphere once the evening kicked off.

Set in the Cornish countryside, Stennack Farm is a brilliant barn wedding venue for couples who want somewhere with character without their wedding feeling overly formal. And for me, it’s the kind of place that works perfectly with a documentary approach to wedding photography.

I loved photographing Lucy & Kyle’s wedding at Stennack Farm. From the start, the atmosphere was relaxed and easy-going. There was plenty of laughter, plenty of emotion, and absolutely no sense that the day needed to follow a particular script. That’s one of the things I love about weddings like this. The best photographs aren’t always the ones you plan. They’re the little reactions, the hugs, the laughs between friends, the nervous moments before the ceremony and everything that happens once everyone starts letting loose.

Lucy & Kyle wanted their wedding to feel chilled during the day, followed by a proper party in the evening, and that’s exactly how it played out. There was plenty of time for everyone to enjoy being together, with the celebrations eventually moving towards the dance floor and the party really getting started.

And that’s where documentary wedding photography comes into its own. Rather than spending the whole day pulling people away from their friends and family, I’m there to photograph what’s actually happening, the atmosphere, the people, the energy and all those little moments that might otherwise be missed.

Stennack Farm is a great fit for the way I photograph weddings. The mix of the rustic barn, countryside surroundings and relaxed atmosphere gives you plenty to work with without the photographs ever feeling too staged.

I’ll always make time for a few portraits of the two of you, and I’m happy to give you some direction if you’re not naturally comfortable in front of a camera. But most of the day is about letting things happen and being there to capture them.

One of the biggest advantages of Stennack Farm is that so much of the wedding can happen in one place. You can get ready with friends and family, have your ceremony, celebrate with your guests and then party into the evening without constantly moving between different locations. And for couples who want a relaxed wedding day, that makes a huge difference.

There are also plenty of opportunities for photographs around the farm. The countryside provides a beautiful backdrop for portraits, while the barn and courtyard bring something completely different as the light changes throughout the day.

And once the evening arrives, the atmosphere of the venue really starts to change. For Lucy & Kyle, Stennack Farm even created signature cocktails for the day, helping get the celebrations underway before things moved towards the evening party.

The party

For me, the evening is always one of the most important parts of a wedding to photograph. By this point, everyone has relaxed. The formalities are out of the way, the drinks are flowing, and the dance floor starts to fill.

Lucy & Kyle’s wedding had exactly that kind of energy. It was chilled and relaxed when it needed to be, but there was also a proper party waiting underneath it all.

Those are the weddings I love photographing. I can move through the room, find the moments as they happen and create images that bring back the feeling of being there.
